April Blockchain Breakfast Briefing: Tokenisation of Real-World Assets
20th April 2023, 8:30 am - 10:30 am
Event Navigation
In our blockchain breakfast briefing on 20 April 2023 hosted by Laura Clatworthy (Partner, Rosenblatt), we have a panel of pioneers and experts discussing exciting new trends in tokenisation and its impending arrival in the mainstream of financial markets.
The digital asset market is rapidly evolving – and converging with traditional finance – in a host of new ways. While media headlines tend to focus on investing in cryptocurrencies or musicians creating NFTs, traditional financial institutions are also looking at this new asset class as a means of tokenising and trading real-world assets such as bonds, real-estate and equities. Thoughts turn to whether cryptoassets can start to be traded on regular markets in the same way as traditional stocks and shares.
This is about more than just the coin exchanges and wallet custodians that support the cryptocurrency markets. What about the listing of coins and tokens as capital-raising instruments? Markets in some of the offshore jurisdictions like Gibraltar are beginning to dabble, though access is generally restricted to sophisticated investors. Are any of the world’s mainstream markets looking at this? What are the structural issues they need to solve?
Archax, the first FCA-regulated digital asset exchange, broker and custodian, recently announced the official launch of its primary raise platform which will give start-ups and early-stage businesses access to raise capital from pre-vetted investors. The ecosystem is designed to allow firms to raise funds through digital issuances, as well as to custody and trade a variety of digital assets, such as digital securities, NFTs and cryptocurrencies.
Likewise, traditional instruments are coming to the Decentralised Finance (DeFi) space. DeFi platform Swarm broke new ground early in 2023 by announcing the launch of the first tokenized public stocks and bond ETFs to be traded on a regulated, decentralized platform.
