Uber wins High Court case

London’s Uber drivers will be breathing a sigh of relief today, after the High Court ruled in its favour against TfL.

TfL had brought the case to court amid pressure from London’s black-cab drivers who argued that the Uber app was in fact a taxi meter. The right to use a taxi meter in London is reserved only for black-cab drivers (in return for their completion of The Knowledge – the three year extensive training course black-cab drivers must do in order to pass a licensing test). Mr Justice Ouseley ruled that the app does not operate in the same way as a taximeter, as it uses GPS and external servers to calculate the fare.

Uber declared it “A victory for common sense” while the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association described the ruling as “Unbelievable!” and have vowed to appeal.
